Detox. It’s not just water and green juices. It’s SO much more!
Not only are popular juice cleanses and water fasts intimidating, but they’re also not the best for regular, lifestyle detoxifying and those just beginning.
(If you missed it, Detox: It’s More than a Fad – Part 1 begins talking about why detoxing in our toxic world is so very essential.)
Though water and juicing can have their place in fasting and cleansing, detoxing actually benefits from concentrated nutrition by supporting the “processing” (changing toxic substances to what can be more easily removed from the body) and “elimination” stages.
In other words, without concentrated nutrition, detox phases can be incomplete and can even release toxins into the body faster than they can be removed (not a good thing!).
Here are just a few of the basic nutrients (some that might surprise you!) needed to support the 3 main phases:
- Energy and protein support the detox stages
- Antioxidants help protect from free radicals while toxins are being changed and eliminated
- B-vitamins, zinc, selenium, Vitamins A, C, E and others specifically support phase 1
- Hydration and fiber support elimination
- Nutrients to support the primary detox organs: liver, kidneys, gut
In addition to “adding in” specific nutrients to support detox, we can’t minimize or forget the importance of reducing chemicals from going into the body:
- manufactured/processed foods
- food additives
- pesticides
- chemicals in household cleaners
- body products
- environmental toxins, etc.
As you can see, Detox is not just a fad, but something that is part of a lifestyle for health and healing…and a regular practice to benefit and support the body.
